And, by the way... Who in the Heck is Orphiuchus?
January 14th, 2011

Commonly referred to as the Serpent Bearer, Orphiuchus is said to have been a real man. Star maps depicting the snake holder originated in ancient Greece during the first century.  And now, more than two-thousand years later the mythology of Orphiuchus seems to be asking us to transform and awaken to our destiny.

As an Astrologer I find it quite intriguing that the archetypal awareness of Orphiuchus is dramatically making its way into Western consciousness during the current transitional “Shift of the Ages”. For those of you who have attended my 2012 presentations you may recall my emphasis on Orphiuchus. Both the Greeks and Egyptians placed importance on the meaning of this ancient thirteenth constellation, for it is Orphiuchus who resides between the transformative sign of the Scorpion and the Sagittarian Archer who points his arrow to the center of our Galaxy – the pivotal point that the Mayans are indicating will spark a spiritual rebirth of humanity once our solar system makes its Galactic alignment on the Winter Solstice, 2012.

Orphiuchus was described by the ancient Greek philosophers and Astrologers as the doctor of medicine, the seer of wisdom, and seeker of peace and harmony.  Snakes are believed by some ancient cultures to be connected to healing and rebirth because they slough their skin every year. They are referred to in the Eastern traditions as Kundalini, which means coiled energy, or awakening of consciousness.  Snakes also represent the underworld, transformation and alchemy – turning base metal into gold – or “the Golden Age.”

Although Western Astrology does not currently recognize Orphiuchus as a zodiac sign in the Astrological horoscope, we certainly can integrate his archetypal meaning into our collective consciousness to assist in the transformation of our spiritual evolution.

"Myth is much more important and true than history. The myth lets you know where you are. It knows what the patterns of life have been through centuries and what position you now are entering or holding.” ~ Joeseph Cambell
